March Madness: The Road to the Championship
As NCAA March Madness is only a few weeks away, our experts here at Dunk City Delight take an in depth look at some of their favorite teams to watch out for.
Kansas(24-3) :
Kansas made a statement with its hard-fought road victory over Baylor on Saturday in a battle between two national title contenders. The Jayhawks (24-3, 13-1) avenged a Jan. 11 loss to Baylor and still have one more loss than the Bears. But Saturday's win should push Kansas to the top overall No. 1. That's because Kansas now features a nation-leading 11 Quadrant 1 (top-30 home, top-75 road) wins and the country's best strength of schedule. How can one not see them as a title contender?
Duke (23-4) :
Duke has been a powerhouse for decades now and this year is no different. The Blue Devils are looking to redeem themselves from their devastating loss against Michigan State last year. Duke has been very inconsistent this season with losses to SFA and Clemson. However, with the talented power duo Cassius Stanley and Vernon Carey Jr. the Blue Devils will be a force come March. Although Duke is currently seated at third in the ACC behind Louisville and Florida State they have what it takes to win it all.
Florida State (23-4) :
Currently seated at number six, Nole nation has an important game tonight against the top seed in the ACC Louisville who currently sits at number 11 overall. With their top player Devin Vassell, the Seminoles can make a leap tonight to become a one seed in the March madness rankings. This team loves to share the ball, with their top scorer only averaging 12.9 PPG. The team still averages about 75 points a game.
Kentucky (22-5) :
For the past couple of seasons, Kentucky has been one of those teams who has always been ranked high coming into the year. Then, they’ll suffer from a couple of bad losses early on, as the freshmen learn to play with each other and the few upperclassmen. Once the season gets going though, they only get tougher, as we’ve seen this season. Immanuel Quickley has emerged as a star in the past few weeks, with three straight games over 20 points, one of those being a 31 point performance versus Texas A & M. He is one of the favorites to win SEC player of the year. Along with Quickley, Tyrese Maxey and Nick Richards are two of our favorite players to watch on this roster. Maxey can be somewhat inconsistent, but can explode at any moment, and Richards is one of the best bigs in the NCAA. This Kentucky team will surely be a threat once the big dance comes around, regardless of their seed.
Baylor (25-2):
Baylor has a team built to win a national title. With a suffocating ‘no middle’ defense, four incredible guards, unique lineup versatility, and two wildcard pieces that could win them a game in March or April, the Bears are for real. Baylor is well-positioned to win the national championship. A decade ago, they fell in the regional final in Houston to Duke. Those Bears didn’t quite have enough defensively, as they blew a six point halftime lead.. This year the Bears have an overwhelming defense that’s held 8-of-9 Big 12 opponents below one point per possession. Led by the four best guards in America, they’re one of four teams (Kansas, Duke and San Diego State are the others) with a top-25 offense and defense.
